Best Mods that Will Change Rimworld For Good
With the recent release of the Rimworld DLC Odyssey, there is now another surge of people who are building out cool mods for the game. When it comes to playing Rimworld, the mods can enhance and expand the world in numerous ways that make a night-and-day difference. Today, we are going to look at some great and in-depth mods out there! This list is focused on mods that are supported by the 1.6 patch.
Note: Some of these mods may not work without certain DLCs if you do not own them, but you can pick them up at a cheap discount from here.
Star Wars KotOR Factions
Very extensive mod that includes a bunch of different optional and required mods made by the same creator, which creates that Star Wars vibe with all the fauna, weapons, xenotypes, and droids, among other iconic apparel. The Mod also includes 15 different factions, titles, ideologies, and scenarios based on Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, with the setting taking place 5 years after Kotor II. There are new gameplay features also added in, like Caravan traders, Loot boxes & Command tier abilities.

Trains of the Rim
Trains of the Rim revolutionizes your colony’s bulk transportation options by introducing a railway vehicle system. Trains can efficiently move large quantities of cargo and passengers across vast distances. However, your colony must pay the upfront cost of labor-intensive rail infrastructure to gain the long-term benefits of massive cargo capacity and significant fuel efficiency. I think this is, overall, a great quality of life mod that makes traversing a bit more interesting and convenient in the game.

Melee Animation
This mod aims to spice up the regular Rimworld melee combat by adding custom hand-made animations for attacking & moving, and for new melee mechanics: duels, executions, and Unique Skills. The mod also (optionally) adds lassos to pull enemies into melee range; this can be toggled off at Mod settings on options.

Blood Animations
A Visual mod that adds blood sprays, animated bleeding, ricochets, impact debris, and bullet casings! Very good aesthetic mod, and there is are fair amount of settings for this mod to reduce the blood amount if you are too worried about cleaning stuff too much.

Worldbuilder Mod
Ever wanted to create and customize everything in the generated world? Well, this worldbuilder mod allows you to select the world, create your own, and get deeper settings where you can save your faction bases, ideologies, terrain, map texts, and map markers, among other things. This also expands into editing world modifiers and stylizing items in-game with the customization feature. There are a lot more amazing features that are bundled in, so make sure to read the whole Steam page to understand everything that is being added on.

Transport Shuttle
Thought I would be adding some Odyssey-related Mods on this list, and one that piqued my eye was this Transport shuttle mod. This mod is an ideological continuation of the Transport Shuttle Standalone mod, but based on flight mechanics from the Odyssey DLC. This mod adds three different ships with different stats and some level of customization.

Mythic Ages Megafauna Beastiary
Mythic Ages: Megafauna Bestiary expands the wild ecosystems of RimWorld with colossal, prehistoric, and near-mythical creatures. Inspired by the vastness of boreal and temperate forests, this bestiary brings extinct predators, titanic herbivores, and uniquely evolved beasts into your game, each crafted with distinct behavior, resources, and roles in both tribal and medieval colonies. What I like about this mod is that it’s a bit more expensive than other fauna packs, as these guys have their specific loot and they are built to be like a high-risk, high-reward setup.

Scrub Daddy Hairstyles
There are multiple cosmetic mods out there, mostly hair styles from your favorite IPs and franchises, which I could have listed here, but I decided to go with Scrub Daddy version as they are very high quality and they work lot of factions and races in the game, plus it doesn’t have many prerequisites.

Vanilla Factions Expanded – Medieval 2
As a long-time fan of Vanilla Factions Expanded – Medieval and Vanilla Factions Expanded – Vikings, I can confidently say that VFE – Medieval 2 is a worthy successor to these beloved classics. It takes everything that made the originals great and refines it further. This isn’t a strict medieval overhaul that strips away late-game content in favour of medieval-only gameplay—instead, it’s been thoughtfully crafted to bridge the gap between the Neolithic and industrial eras.
Medieval technologies stay relevant well into your colony’s progression, making the transition between eras feel natural and rewarding. For those looking to push the immersion even further, there’s a range of optional companion mods available, letting you tailor your experience toward that perfect medieval-themed playthrough.

Upscaled Textures
If you’re looking to give your game a visual facelift, this mod is a fantastic companion to Vanilla Textures Expanded (which you should grab) and the mods from the HDWorld retexture list. It provides beautiful, hand-drawn upscales for almost every texture those packs don’t already cover, filling in the gaps for a truly consistent HD look.
It also folds in the Retextured Sculpture mod—though the author has promised to remove it if the original creator ever returns or requests it. This pack was commissioned by livon0/Mac, and you can check out the preview above to see the impressive selection of updated textures on display. (Note: There are many other AI and non-AI upscale texture packs out there, so there is lot of options if this is not working for you)

Obsidia Expansion Mod
The main innovation of the mod is the Nanomorph xenotype, from the planet Obsidia. Whispers in forbidden archives speak of a hidden Archotech — a silent architect rumored to dwell on one of the lost worlds of the Obsidia Empire. According to fragmented records and outlawed cult writings, this being engineered the first nanomorphs as part of an experiment in controlled post-human evolution. Whether created for war, survival, or something far beyond human understanding, their true purpose remains unknown.

Faction: Utilitarian (DOOM)
This mod adds Titan Corp’s Utilitarian PMC, closely linked to the Union Aerospace Corporation, into your RimWorld universe. As part of the ARC initiative, they patrol the Outer Rim and help local communities build defenses against hostile forces. It includes DOOM-inspired armor sets by Fiendakko, a unique friendly faction with enlistment options for your colonists, iconic items like the DOOM 3 UAC Medpack, Thirsty Burst soda, and the MG-88 Enforcer, plus a Tweaker remake by Jupiter on the Contracts screen. When paired with [RH2] DOOM, Utilitarian troops also appear with expanded weapon variations, making them an even stronger presence in your game.
